Volunteers Needed to Help Local Families in Need

A Central Lancashire Based Charity that has helped hundreds of families through difficult times is appealing for more volunteers so it can continue it’s vital work.

Home-Start Central Lancashire supports families that are facing difficulties such as a parent or child’s illness or disability, multiple births, family breakdown, bereavement or debt. Parents may feel isolated if they are new to an area and they are unable to connect with their local community.

Whatever the reason Home-Start provides practical and emotional support and helps families build their confidence and ability to cope.

Home-Start volunteers offer support and friendship to other parents through a combination of home visiting and family group support.

Volunteers are recruited, trained and supported by Home-Start staff. The next training course will be on the 15th September 2017 and will be held at The Parks Children Centre, Skelmersdale every Friday for 6 weeks.

Volunteering with Home-Start appeals to anyone who has parenting or childcare experience who would like to improve the life of a child. It often appeals to people looking to enter a career in childcare, mothers with older children finding they now have more time on their hands or people in their early retirement. There are no age limits and both women and men can apply, all volunteers must have an enhanced DBS check and two satisfactory references.

Angela Melling CEO of Home-Start explained “We need to keep recruiting volunteers on a regular basis because some leave the area, whilst others may move onto paid work using their experience of volunteering for Home-Start.

It is vital for us to keep a constant programme of recruiting and training so we can keep on supporting families”.

Angela continued, “The wonderful thing is that often our volunteers get just as much out of the visits as families. There is a real feel good factor with knowing you are making a difference and are appreciated. Additionally volunteers often find they make new friends and with all the training we provide there are lots of opportunities to gain new skills.”
