Secret Santa’s are stressful! What do you buy Sheila from Accounts, who you have only passed pleasantries with once in the toilets? The old adage of “It’s the thought that counts” doesn’t even enter your head as you scrabble around a discount shop at 4:30pm the Sunday before Monday’s bran tub drop. Ultimately, we all buy generic presents for a fiver we really could live without. Christmas should be a time of giving, meaningful gifts in a thoughtful way, but all too often, in the scramble between catering for family, wrapping gifts for friends and balancing the work do’s, we forget that.
This year, West Lancashire CVS decided to make their Secret Santa more meaningful. So, on Thursday 6th December 2018 they held a Secret Santa get together with a twist. Staff and trustees were invited to a Christmas coffee morning, with 14 attending. The room looked very festive, with an array of Christmas jumpers on display and the atmosphere was jollied along with a fun Christmas quiz.
Instead of raising money or swapping gifts, everyone donated goods for the local Foodbank and 4 large boxes were filled full of food and toiletries.
Nicci Sutton-Kelsall, Social Prescriber and Social Media Lead (West Lancs Buzz) at West Lancashire CVS said “I am really delighted with how much effort the whole team has put in to our collection. Everybody here at WLCVS always gives a 110% to everything that we do and we love celebrating Christmas. We are all absolutely thrilled with the amount of goods that we have collected for such a worthy scheme!”
The food and gifts will be donated to the Ecumenical Centre and Evermoor Community Hub, Skelmersdale, and will go some way to making up Christmas hampers for local families in need, making Secret Santa giving much more meaningful.
